Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting millions of lives each year. It is a complex disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that can invade other parts of the body.
Various factors, including genetics, environmental exposures, and lifestyle choices, contribute to the risk of developing cancer. Early detection, timely intervention, and access to effective treatments play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes.
PESHAWAR: The Oncology Department at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, observed Cancer Day world with a special event emphasizing the significance of patient-centered care. The event aimed to raise awareness about cancer treatment, prevention, and the need for continued advancements in oncology.
This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), stresses the individuality of each cancer patient’s journey and the importance of personalized treatment approaches. The event at KTH underscored the necessity of a holistic strategy in combating cancer, focusing on early detection, timely treatment, and compassionate care.
Dr. Muhammad Tariq, Head of the Oncology Department at KTH, spoke about the department’s contributions to cancer care in the region. “KTH Oncology is the only postgraduate training center in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) dedicated to preparing future oncologists and cancer specialists.
We serve as a major referral center for both hematological and solid organ malignancies, ensuring that patients receive specialized care,” he stated.
The commemoration of Cancer Day world at KTH served as a reminder of the ongoing fight against cancer and the need for continued efforts in research, policy reforms, and improved healthcare facilities.
